BROADCAST AWARDS.

At the end of winter students gather to participate in the annual Broadcast Awards, where students compete in various on-site competitions as well as submission pre made content both are aimed at helping them build their television and radio broadcasting skillsets. 

CATEGORIES.

Below is a list of categories included in the Broadcast Awards. Each submission is $10.
This list may be updated and/or changed, so please check back often.

PRERECORDED CATEGORIES.

Commercial
Up to 60 sec.

Create a clever, funny, memorable commercial advertising a school-related product, event or activity.

Entertainment Segment
Up to 2 min.

Create a video that presents information in a creative way. This doesn’t follow the same format as a news story. Instead, it could be something such as reviews, vlogs, discussions, vodcasts, quick how-to’s, etc. Be creative and have fun.
Event Recap
2-3 min.

Any recap that aired within the school that is submitting the entry. Let your creativity fly!
PSA
Up to 60 sec.

Create a PSA that focuses on improving social welfare such as: anti-smoking, -drug or -alcohol use, volunteering, civic beautification, etc.
Mini Documentary
Up to 2 min.

This category should follow the same style and feel as a typical documentary, sometimes called "soft" news. This is not a news story. No “mock-umentaries.”
Radio Sports Broadcast
A 3 min. portion

Take a 3-minute portion from any sports broadcast. The broadcast can not contain any cuts or edits. You will take the section of the the broadcast that you feel is the best. You can enter as an individual or as a group (No maximum number of people in a group entry, but you’ll need to specify a group leader when you enter). You may take the audio from a video/audio broadcast.
Show Intro
Up to 2 min.

Proudly promote and introduce your show and/or the school your show represents.
News Story
Up to 2 min.
​

Broadcast journalism is all about presenting information in the most effective way possible. Each entry should effectively communicate the who, what, when, where and how of the topic.
Competition Recap
A 2 min. portion

Upload audio with Black Screen for Video to Youtube. A recap of any high school “competitive” event. All high school sports as well as cheer, drill, band and ballroom. Limit 2 entries per school. Recorded Live at event.
Podcast
1 or 2 min.
​

Create a one OR two-minute (nothing in-between) audio recording where you tell a story. Something you would hear on “RadioLab”, “This American Life”, or an old time radio show. You can take whatever format you wish for the presentation of your argument (a straight talk, a debate, include sound effects and or royalty-free music etc). You can enter as an individual or as a group (maximum of four people in a group entry, and you’ll need to specify a group leader when you enter).
Radio Product Commercial
Up to 30 sec.

Create a commercial advertising a real event. The event must be non-commercial which means specifics of the sale must be excluded. Focus attention of commercial on the details of the event.
Radio Station Promo
10 sec.

Create a radio station promo. You must include your Radio station name (Real or Imaginary Name) and where to listen to the station. You will be judged on the use of effects and flow of the promo.

"DAY OF" COMPETITIONS

Day of Competitions are held two weeks before awards show and cost $10
Anchor Competition
2-3 min.
​

Each school can send up to 2 male and 2 female anchors. Competitors will be given the same “news” to write their show with. They will then read their show via teleprompter while being judged. Each school needs to provide someone to run teleprompter for its anchors.
Radio Commercial Competition
Up to 60 sec.
​

Each school can send two 2-person teams. They will be given 4-5 hours to receive their topic, record, and edit their finished commercial.

News Package Competition
1.5-2 min.

Each school can send two 2-person teams consisting of a field reporter and a photographer. They will be given 4-5 hours to receive their topic, news gather, and edit their finished package. All teams are required to provide their own equipment.
